Speeding in Stockcross

PC Ian Bibbins alerted us to the fact, having conducted a 'Have your Say' survey in the village of Stockcross, that there was still a serious problem with speeding despite various traffic calming measures over many years.  He passed his findings to the Traffic Safety team at West Berkshire Council who in turn contacted the NAG with a request that we distribute the Community Speedwatch Leaflets to notify residents in advance that Stockcross had been selected for the Community Speedwatch programme.  The leaflets were distributed to most houses and the Lord Lyon and The Rising Sun Pubs as well as the Post Office who were all very happy to display the leaflets and very helpful to us.
The Road is the B4000, for the most, it is a national speed limit but becomes a 30 limit as it enters Stockcross.  The problem is that a lot of people are not slowing as they should do to maintain the speed limit. This is more noticeable near to the Post Office and the School crossing area.

Times are sporadic, it happens from 0800 through to 2200.
The Police continue to carry out speeding enforcement.  We are also now fortunate enough to have Neighbourhood Warden coverage for the Parish of Speen and four roads in the Newbury Town Council area who help us deal with  a multitude of issues; Neighbourhood Wardens will be assisting with this enforcement.  In addition Speen Parish Council have requested West Berks to move the 30 mph road signs further away from the village allowing motorists more time to think about their speed as they approach the village.
Data for August passed to the Neighbourhood Acton Group is as follows:
16 - 08 -2011
Towards Wickham 0ffenders 13
Towards Newbury Offenders 42

24-08-2011
Towards Wickham Offenders 15
Towards Newbury Offenders 38

All the details of the offending vehicles above, either have or will be sent to Thames Valley Police for the registered owners to be notified under the Community Speedwatch Scheme.  It is hoped that the message will start to get through that the residents are not happy for motorists to speed through their village.
West Berkshire Council have erected no less than 10 Community Speedwatch posters on the B4000 of varying designs, reminding motorists  of the 30 mph speed limit.

Thank you to Speen Parish Council for kindly putting information on the NAG effort into the local Grapevine magazine for Stockcross.  We were delighted to receive a request from a Stockcross resident who would like to help. The Post Office has also been keeping us informed and we would like to do the same by posting information as it comes through on to our web page. Thanks to everyone who is putting effort in to help to achieve a reduction in speeding through the village.

Latest figures from Traffic Safety at West Berks

11-10-11
Towards Newbury Offenders 30
07-12-11
Towards Newbury - 24 indexes
14-12-11
Towards Wickham - 15 indexes

None of the indexes are local Stockcross residents.  The indexes are a mix of West Berkshire residents and residents outside our area, i.e. Swindon.   It is obviously good news that we are seeing a gradual reduction. Our thanks to the Traffic Safety Safety team at West Berks for providing these figures.
