How can you tell if there’s a cannabis farm near you?
  • Strong, sickly smell given off by cannabis plants.
  • Cannabis growing equipment being taken into a house.  For example, lighting and ventilation equipment.
  • Constantly covered or blocked-off windows.  Cannabis factories often have constantly pulled curtains or black-out blinds.
  • Unsociable coming and going at all hours.  Lots of different people visiting the property might be a clue too.
  • Strong and constant lighting day and night.
  • High levels of heat and condensation.  Cannabis factories often give off heat and the windows stay misted up.
  • Constant buzz of ventilation. Listen out for a whirring sound as the growers try to create an ideal climate for the plants to grow.
  • Lots of power cables.  Gangs dig underground to lay cables that hook up to things like lamp posts so they don’t have to pay for the enormous amounts of electricity they use.  They can easily bypass a £20,000 utility bill; money that will be pushed back to other honest customers to pay through energy price rises.

The Oxford Road NAG would like to thank all the residents that attended the Public meeting that was held on Thursday 7th March at Argyle Church.

Inspector Keith Stacey gave an overview about operations that the Neighbourhood Policing team have carried out regarding prostitution, some facts and figures about drugs related issues and on how many kerb crawlers had been sent on the 'Change Course' and for the fir

Some of the residents that attended this meeting felt that gating some of the alleyway had helped with the issue. But a resident had informed the meeting that a newly installed gate between Oxford Road and Western Elms Avenue had had the lock broken twice. This was being looked into by Jo Anderson, Neighbourhood Project Officer at Reading Borough Council.

The Oxford Road NAG would encourage local residents to report any activities of prostitution and anti-social behaviour that is associated to the Police via the non-emergency 101 number. Alternatively, we can arrange for diary sheets to be sent to residents along with pre-paid envelops, just use the 'contact us' link from the Oxford Road NAG webpage.

These diary sheets are being used by Police and Reading Borough Council to build up a map of the hot spot areas that are affecting by prostitution and help with any cases that will be taken to court as a direct result of any action taken by the Police.
