Stop Nuisance Calls and Mail

Unsolicited phone calls and post are an annoyance to us all - here are a few solutions:

Telephone Preference Service - 0800 398893 (this is a free service)

www.tpsonline.org.uk/tps/index.html

The above is a link to a registration scheme for people who wish to avoid receiving unsolicited sales and marketing calls.  Within 28 days of registering, all unwanted marketing calls should stop.  Registration applies to specific telephone numbers, and remains in place until otherwise requested.

The scheme offers statutory protection by placing obligations on marketing companies and others to respect the wishes of subscribers.  It is unlawful to make a direct marketing call without first checking the register of those who do not wish to be contacted.  Unfortunately, it will not stop overseas calls.

The silent calls are generated by automatic dialling equipment which call more numbers than there are operators available to take the calls.  Hence there being no-one there when you answer.  This is a free service which helps to stop or reduce the number of silent, abandoned and recorded message calls you receive.  You can register online at www.silentgard.com/index2.html or telephone 0844 3722 325.

Anonymous Caller Rejection - dial 150 from a BT line.  (A BT service that costs c£12 per quarter)

This prevents calls from withheld numbers.  If you subscribe to this service, any personal or company that withholds their number before dialling your telephone number will hear a recorded message saying, 'the person you are calling is not accepting anonymous calls.  Please redial without withholding your number'.  After this message the caller is automatically disconnected.

Mailing Preference Service - 0207 291 3310 - Website: www.mpsonline.org.uk/mpsr

This is a free registration scheme funded by the direct mailing industry.  To avoid receiving unsolicited mail, names and home addresses are removed from lists used by the industry.

Write to:  The Mailing Preference Service, FREEPOST 22, London W1E 7EZ stating that you would like your details included.  Some unwanted mail may continue for a few weeks after registration.

This service stops most unsolicited advertising material addressed to individuals being delivered to their home.  Subscribers will continue to receive advertising from companies with which they have previously done business, or charities to which they have donated to in the past.  If this mail is not wanted anymore, it can only be stopped by contacting the sender directly.

Royal Mail and Trading Standards' Initiative to tackle scam mail
