Desert Island Discs
- NAG Style!

Welcome to Desert Island Discs - NAG style! A chance to find out a little more about a member of our Newbury South West Action Group.
Castaway, please begin by introducing yourself and telling us how you became involved with the Newbury South West Neighbourhood Action Group.
Castaway's answer:
I am Marion. I was born and raised on a farm in Norfolk, the fourth of six children plus four older fostered children, so I've always been surrounded by masses of people. Respect for one another came by example and helped us grow into well adjusted adults. We worked every daylight hour given so never knew boredom and slept well at night. Rarely did less than 15 sit down to the lunch table and I remember the Baker delivering six double loaves daily just in time for tea, before the afternoon milking began.
I trained as a Nurse, Midwife and sick baby specialist. My husband and I came to Wash Common 37 years agao and have lived in the same house ever since. Our four children were all educated locally and all work with people - Doctor, Psychotherapist and Teachers. I would not want to be a castaway for too long! I would so miss being with people of all ages.
I have been involved over the years in running parent, baby and toddler groups, pre-school, retirement club, allotment steward and weekly primary school gardening sessions plus being a school governor, fund raising for schools and Wash Common play equipment, mainly by running plant stalls. I am a keen gardener and like to share the pleasure gardening brings with anybody, especially children, including our grandchildren when they visit.
I became involved with the NAG after being invited to attend the initial meeeting which was held to explain the possibility of setting up a NAG. If anybody was interested in becoming part of the group we were asked to complete a form. I filled in the form and said why I wanted to be a member. I feel I am a people person with a wide experience of interacting with people from all walks of life and of all ages. At the time, we had our own teenage family and loads of their friends enjoyed coming to our house, so I felt well able to interact with the young people. I was notified that I had been selected and have been a NAG member ever since!
I want the best for people and like to be involved in listening to others as to how our locality can be improved so concerns can be taken forward by the NAG.
On your desert island you may have three pieces of music to entertain you. What recordings would you like?
Castaway's answer:
Firstly Annie's Song by John Denver. Whether it's the voice, words, the melody or scene this song portrays, I just love this song!
Second, Davy Crockett by Foss Parker. Pure childhood happy memories. One of my brothers had a Davy Crockett hat and I'd spend many fun hours as an infant holding it, singing Davy Crockett to myself - my brothers were always singing it or whistling it. In fact, I could have chosen 'I'll Whistle A Happy Tune' to bring the smile to my face of those happy childhood days. We learnt about sharing and being there for one another.
Finally, Oh What a Beautiful Morning by Frank Sinatra. Who, when in the open countryside, cannot appreciate the sun coming up at 4.30am when starting the milking? Thinking back to the number of times I sung (cat's calling my brothers would tease) this cheerful song whilst early morning milking. I'm sure the cows would know the words too. They certainly were relaxed and gave plenty of milk!
You may also have one book to relieve the monotony, which title do you choose?
Castaway's answer:
Oxford Reverse Dictionary so I can learn and use some less familiar words/expressions, especially when using my luxury item.
And your one luxury item to accompany you?
Castaway's answer:
Masses of stationery to include various types of quality paper, rough paper, plain and coloured paper plus pens, ink, crayons, charcoal and pastels so I can write and illustrate to my heart's content. I could doodle all day - I always have a supply of pencils and paper when on the telephone!
